The
Procedure
Step 1 The image was drawn in pencil on 12
hardwood panels.
The painting consisted of 12 separate, 4' X 8'
scenes depicting rural life in the early west. When assembled, these
scenes form the final painting, a panorama 48' wide and 8' tall. The
above photo shows the panels folded.
Step 2 The drawing was then color-coded using
dots of paint.
There were seven southwest colors used.
(Desert Peach, Yellow Destiny, Aqua Bead, Violet Vista,
Intense Jade, Radiant Coral, and Ultra Blue.)
Step 3 Each painter signed a registration book
and waiver.
There are 25,297 names and addresses.
Step 4 People could paint for free.
However, when a nonprofit organization used
the picture as a fund-raising project a donation was collected from each
painter.
Step 5 After signing in,
everyone was given an dab of paint from a medicine
dropper. The paint was put in a plastic film cap.
Step 6
Each person got to pick a color.
1, 0 and 00 brushes were used. Brushes were bought in bulk.
Only nine gallons of paint was used.
Step 7 After getting their paint,
each person
simply matched their paint color with the colored dots on the board.
Step 8 Anyone could paint -- young and old.
However, a person could only paint on one panel and only paint once.
The goal was to get as many people to participate as possible.
Step 9
Everyone was asked to remember where they
painted.
Once completed, the picture went on a 13-city tour.
A reception was held for the participants so they could see the whole 48' long artwork.
